Texas Rangers are investigating the death of a 23-year-old black female Navarro College student , while waiting to be booked in at the Navarro County Jail.
The suspect, Ahjah Dixon, was arrested by campus police at the college on a warrant for Possession of a Controlled Substance around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, 2010.
She was transported to the jail around 4:16 p.m. and placed in a holding cell with three other females who were also waiting to be booked in.
Around 6 p.m., Dixon began having problems breathing and told officers she needed some air. She was taken to the east side recreation yard where she asked for some water.
She took several sips of water and began having a seizure.
The nurse at the jail requested an ambulance.
EMS arrived and transported Dixon to the Navarro Regional ER, where emergency room medical personnel did CPR and about 6:54 p.m., Dixon was pronounced dead.
Justice of the Peace, Pct. 3, Bob McQuary was called to the hospital and ordered Dixon’s body be sent to Southwest Institute Forensic Science in Dallas for an autopsy.
Texas Ranger Jason Bobo, out of Waxahachie, was notified by officials and arrived in Corsicana around 8 p.m. Thursday night.
Navarro County Sheriff detectives, Captain Elmer Tanner, Sgt. Hank Bailey, and Sgt. Morris Steward were called in to assist Ranger Bobo with the investigation.
Navarro County Sheriff, Les Cotten, via telephone, said the investigation is still ongoing, and that officials with Navarro College were handling any media inquiries related to the investigation.
Dixon’s mother was notified by the Navarro College Police concerning the death of her daughter.
